ARTIST BIO

Julio Sanchez's art has taken many turns throughout his career, only to come back to where he started; realism.

The painter's travel throughout life has brought him from Cuba, New York, Connecticut, Barcelona, Spain,  Los Angeles, and Miami Beach; where he currently resides.  In 1989  he graduated from New York City's School of Visual Arts and initiated Sanchez Studios in nearby Connecticut.  He was awarded two state grants to teach mural techniques;  Connecticut in 1991, and in California following the L.A. Riots in 1993.  Throughout the years the public has viewed his paintings in galleries, businesses, television and museums throughout the United States.

"It is difficult at times to describe where inspiration comes from, for an artist.  In our modern world of New York minutes and an ultra-saturation of images,  I am inundated with both photographic images and fragments of life.   Today  everything seems to be digitized, diced, and condensed into pieces."

In working with photo-realism, where subjects have to be broken into fragments of squares; the discovery of the  square shape has become a long term engagement with Sanchez.

"The square is uniquely man-made, it is  a perfect shape that surrounds us in every aspect of our lives.  Yet, because we know what squares are and see them all around us, we take them for granted.  But for me it is the perfect tool to use  to form my images; it both  constructs and deconstructs the painting, adding  a supplementary depth to each piece."
